dimesna

A synthetic derivative of dithio-ethane sulfonate used as an uroprotective agent in chemotherapy. In vivo, dimesna undergoes reduction to mesna during intestinal absorption. Mesna exerts efficient protection against oxazaphosphorine-induced urothelial toxicity by binding to and detoxifying the urotoxic metabolites acrolein and 4-hydroxy ifosfamide. This agent also inhibits cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.dimesna
